Tournament Series Information

In 2005, TVA introduced a new Beach System to help promote the growth of the beach volleyball game. We have looked at many other beach systems, such as AVP, FIVB, JSVBA, CBVA, and many more, and taken our own history into consideration, and the following is what we came up with.

One change is everyone must be a TVA member to participate in TVA tournaments. You may purchase a One Event Membership for $5 or a special Beach Membership for $15. These two memberships are only good to TVA beach events, and will not allow you to participate in any indoor TVA functions, but you can upgrade to a full TVA membership at any time. Please check our web page for more information about the TVA Beach Membership. Want to purchase your Beach Membership online?

Divisions Offered

We will run the following divisions this summer for men, woman and coed doubles. AAA, AA, A, BB, and B, with AAA being the highest and B being the lowest. AAA is what used to be referred to as Open; this is just a clarification of levels as Open play is considered professional athletes who usually compete on the AVP or FIVB tours. We will also offer Coed 4’s this summer in the B, BB and A levels.

All men’s and woman’s competitions will be held on Saturdays, while all Coed (Including 4’s) competitions will be held in Sunday.

Under this new system, everyone who has not played in an event is considered Unrated (U). Players must earn their rankings at events; no rankings are just given away.

Tournament Format

Tournament format will be round robin pool play followed by playoffs if pool play format allows. For pool play information, please click here.
All pool play will be match play, best two out of three. Sets will be played to a variety of points, the tournament director will have final say on points played to the day of the tournament. Our goal is to play two out of three to 21 with the deciding game to 15 if necessary.

Player Rankings

Ranking are earned in the following format:

# of teams Rankings earned
<3 1st Place earns one level lower than division level
4-6 1st place earns division level
7-10 1st place earns next level, 2nd place earns division level
11-16 1st & 2nd place earn next level, Teams tied for 3rd earn division level
17-20 1st and 2nd earn next level, Teams tied for 3rd & 5th earn division level
21+ 1st, 2nd, and Teams Tied for 3rd earn next level, Teams tied for 5th & 9th earn division level

Once you earn your ranking, you keep that ranking until April 1st of the following year. On April 1st, every ranking will be dropped one division. So if you are ranked AAA, after April 1st you will be ranked AA. Why April 1st you ask, because it is April Fools Day! Remember, rankings on the beach are earned, not given away!

Play in 4’s does not affect your doubles ranking, and vice versa.

Playing Divisions: If you and your partner(s) are a U (Unrated) athlete, you may play in any division you wish to play in. If you and your partner are ranked the same, then you must play in the division you are ranked or a higher one. If you and your partner are different ranked, you may play at one division lower than the highest ranked partner. So if you are ranked AA and AA, then you must play at AA or higher. If you are ranked AA and B, then you must play at A or higher.

Rules:

This year we are attempting to make rules easy for tournaments, we will be following USAV rules right from the USAV Rule book. If you have any questions about the rules we will be using, please follow this link to download the rule book:

Point System:

This year we are incorporating a point system for rankings. This will help us to make sure all pre-registered pools will be seeded fairly, it will also determine the winners of the Bonus Pool. Points are accumulated for the entire season. Points will be kept for separate types of play. For example, if you play in a 4’s tournament, those points will not be awarded towards your doubles points. Or if you play single sex doubles tournaments, those points are not awarded towards your coed doubles points. Points are only awarded for the type of tournament you are playing. Points are reset back to zero April 1 of each year.

Place AAA AA A BB B

*Participation points are given to all teams that enter that division, on top of any points they may earn by their finish.

Bonus Pool

Bonus Pool is designed to encourage playing more, and it will reward those that do play more nicely. The way bonus pool works is like this. For each doubles team that enters a tournament, TVA will take $10 out of their entry fee and store it away in the Bonus Pool. Bonus Pool money stays in the division it is paid into. So if your team enters BB, your teams $10 stays in BB.

Now, here is the fun part of the Bonus Pool, whichever player(s) are ranked highest in each division after the end of the last tournament, will automatically receive 25% of the bonus pool money! (For Coed Divisions, starting in 2006 the pool will be split into the highest ranking male and female player in that division) The rest of the bonus pool money will be awarded to the teams that finish 1st (60% of remaining Pool $), 2nd (30% of remaining Pool $), and 3rd (10% remaining Pool $) in the TVA Beach Championships, on top of the normal prizes we give out. (So as an example, lets say over the course of the summer we had 129 men’s A teams compete in our events. That would have made the Bonus Pool valued at $1290. Which means the player(s) who was ranked highest at the end of the tournament would have received a check for $322.50, just for being the highest ranked person! First Place Money for that division on that day would have been $580.50, 2nd place would have earned $290.25 and 3rd place would have earned $96.75)

To be eligible for the Bonus Pool Money, you must have either earned your current ranking during the current summer series, or have played in at least 2 events of that level or lower during the current Summer Series. This goes for all Bonus Pool money including the Big Money Weekend. There will be a trickle down effect for the Bonus Pool Money in the situation that the person who wins does not meet the eligibility requirements.
