How do I know what level I should play?
The various tournament classifications being offered provide for a complete range of skill levels. Players may participate in any level provided they do not have a rating. Tournament results are recorded and used as a basis for a player rating system. Players are rated according to their recent tournament finishes and are not permitted to compete in divisions which are below their rating. First time players are encouraged to play in the "B" division. All divisions are not offered for each event.

    • "B" - Beginners with good ball control that have never been rated and players who have a knowledge of the game, with basic skills.
    • "BB" - Players with good skills and a knowledge of the game, and have developed consistency.
    • "A" - Players with exceptional skills and ability who have (to some extent) mastered all the aspects of the game and consistently compete at a high level.
    • "AA" - Exceptionally talented athletes who have developed all the skills necessary to compete at the highest level.
    • "AAA" - Top caliber players who have proved to be the best in the sport. Level is also referred to as "Open".

How much will we play each night?
Each night we attempt to have 3 teams per net that will play in a mini-round robin that night. Each team will play two matches (a match consists of 2 games) and referee one match a night. (Depending upon sunlight we will play games to 25, 21, 18, etc depending upon the amount of sunlight available. The staff will make decisions as to how much sunlight is available.) There may be some divisions where teams are scheduled to play 3 matches a night and not referee a match, but those are only in divisions that are not divisible by three. Play starts at 6:15pm each night, work teams should be at the beach by 6:00pm to set up the lines and pick up the clipboards for that night. Play is usually over around dark each night.

Do we need to pay a referee fee like we do indoors?

No, there is no referee fee like there is indoors. Each team will be responsible for working one match a night on their nets. We do not provide officials for the nets. Each net will have a clipboard with the rules of play on them. Also, the site director each night will be available with a rule book to solve any disputes that may arise. The clipboard rules will have a sheet attached to them that explains the most commonly misunderstood rules in an attempt to stop arguments before they start. Rule Sheets for the clipboards may be downloaded by clicking here.

What other programs does TVA offer?
The Tidewater Volleyball Association operates a five court indoor hard surface facility with over 1,800 members. League play, tournaments, youth development and classes are offered. Beach volleyball tournaments are also held at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Play begins in early April and is held throughout the summer. For more information on any TVA program, contact our office at 757-498-5052.

How do I get registration forms?
Contact our office and we can fax or mail you a registration form. You can also register on line, simply follow the links on the main page. We can also add you to our mailing list so you know about upcoming events.

Do I have to be a TVA member to play?
Membership in the Tidewater Volleyball Association is required to participate in tournament play. This is new for this year. You can either purchase a one day membership for $5 or you may purchase a full summer Beach membership for $15. How long does the league last?
League is scheduled to last 8 weeks plus 1 week of playoffs (Some leagues we may need two weeks for playoffs). Rain out dates will not be made up.

What about the Weather?
TVA is dedicated to letting teams play weather permitting. TVA however does not decide if the beach is open or closed, that is left up to the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service. The beach is usually only closed when lighting is seen. Rule of thumb is the beach will remain closed until 30 minutes after the last visible lightning strike. Remember summer thunderstorms can be very sporadic, it might be raining in downtown Norfolk but it is beautiful at the beach. When in doubt, call the TVA office or show up at the beach. Our staff does everything in our power to allow teams to play safely. Also remember since we are playing on the beach, we do not have to worry about drainage as the sand rarely puddles, so even if it rains all day and the sun comes out at 6:00 pm, we will be playing.
TVA has four methods we attempt to notify teams about canceling play on a night. We will post it on our AIM screenname TVAInfo, we will place a message on our phone system, 498-5052 ext 6, and if time allows we will attempt to call team captains as well.

Where does my entry fee go?
For most TVA events, your entry fee is paid directly to the Tidewater Volleyball Association. TVA is a non-profit charitable organization that supports many different volleyball programs in the Hampton Roads area. Your entry fees cover prizes, setup, staff salary, insurance, taxes, city permits and other league expenses. TVA also works with other non-profit groups to assist in marketing and raising money for their worthwhile causes.
