Modified
Pools
Modified pools are a new trend that is sweeping the country over
the past few year, USAV Volleyball is experimenting with pushing
these pools for tournaments across the land. Modified pools have
been used in other FIVB countries for years.
The modified five team pools were created to keep the waiting
time down in tournaments of various sizes. In a typical tournament
with match play, the time difference between a four team pool
and a 5 team pool is approximately 3-4 hours!! That is a long
time to wait to start playoffs if you advance from a 4 team pool.
The modified five team pool only time difference between a 4 team
pool is 1-2 hours, which is a much more reasonable time to wait!
Most beach players can recall sitting on the beach for hours waiting
for pools to finish, the modified pools should help keep those
thoughts as memories and not horror stories from this summer.
While we do not necessarily like the modified pools, we see a
huge benefit from them. It allows the tournaments to run smoother
and on time, while allowing teams to play a wider array of teams.
Yes, we do understand that one team gets to play an extra match,
but with our seeding process, the team that gets to play the extra
match is the lowest ranked team, so every team has a chance to
play the lowest seeded team. The two highest seeded teams do not
play each other in pool play either, which if teams hold their
seed, should allow the two best teams off their net.
TVA understands these modified pools are different, we hope you
give them a fair chance and see how they work. We think you will
be pleasantly surprised by their added advantages.
Seven team modified pools are very simple. We understand that
playing 6 matches of pool play is a lot to ask of teams during
the heat of the day. In the modified seven team pools, each team
is guaranteed four matches during pool play, and then the top
4 teams come off into a playoff round. This should allow the top
teams to move off the net and play in a playoff format. This have
been a huge success in many parts of the world, and some major
tournaments are now formatting their draws into this seven team
bracket.
