Where to Play

Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads area is a great place to live if you love to play volleyball. With great beaches, recreation centers and not to mention the Tidewater Volleyball Association, what more could a volleyball player want?

For the indoor player, Tidewater Volleyball Center (five court indoor volleyball facility) is the place to play. League play is held throughout the year along with tournaments, clinics, youth programs and other events. In addition, the Virginia Beach Recreation Centers offer open gym several times a week throughout the city.

Below is an offering of local volleyball courts, leagues, facilities and in general, places to play. If you know of a "place to play" that we missed in any of the local cities, let us know. This listing is constantly under development.

Outdoor Volleyball - Pick Up Games
Virginia Beach Oceanfront
9th Street / Oceanfront Area
Info: TVA in cooperation with the City of Virginia Beach sets up nets for open play. Typically 10 - 25 nets are permitted by the city depending on other conflicting events. Courts are reserved for league play starting in early June through late August after 6PM. Additional non-league courts are made available whenever possible. Lines or volleyballs are not provided for open play.
Level of Play / Format: Recreational, beginner, intermediate through advanced & professionals. Doubles are the norm but some nets often have other formats. Women's courts are also set up.

Virginia Beach Oceanfront
40th Street - 89th Street
Info: Many locals set up nets along the north end of the oceanfront. These are private poles and nets but often times pickup games can be found here.
Level of Play / Format: Recreational, beginner through intermediate. Doubles, triples, fours and sixes are often played.

Chick's Beach
All along shore drive and bordering beaches and neighborhoods
Info: Many locals set up nets along these bayside beaches. These are private poles and nets but often times pickup games can be found here.

Outdoor Beach Leagues
Tidewater Volleyball Association
Where: Virginia Beach Oceanfront - 9th Street & North to the 17th Street Pier
When: June through August
Formats: Doubles - men's, women's & coed / coed 4's
Info: The largest league in the area! Entry forms are available in March. League features several divisions in all formats. Many participants gather after league play at one of the many great restaurants. League features 8 - 18 courts, Monday through Thursday evenings.

Outdoor Tournaments
Tidewater Volleyball Association
Where: Virginia Beach Oceanfront - 4th through 9th Streets
When: April - September
Formats: Doubles - men's, women's & coed / Coed 4's
Info: Entry forms are available in April. Tournaments are held on weekends throughout the summer beginning around 8:30AM until early evening.

Dismal Swamp Digs
Where: Jamestown, Virginia
When: Saturday - Always the first weekend in May
Formats: Coed 6's Tournament
Info: Through their web site at www.thedigs.net. This yearly tournament is one not to miss. Many people camp on site at the Jamestown Beach Campground. This tournament is not run but TVA but is attended by many of its members.

When: Dates vary depending upon the tour
Format: Men's Open, Double Elimination
