Tidal Wave of Success Following Country Girl
Written by Joe Henry
Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Amber Smith was retired from volleyball until her mom
found the TVA club. Now, this talented senior is on the
brink of playing in college
Nestled in small-town America, Chuckutuck, Virginia is
a quiet city outside of Suffolk that about 1,000 people
call home. It’s a place of few traffic lights, where
life is simple and the local 7-11 is about three minutes
from your house. It’s a place where it’s common
to see a girl hunting and fishing, and wearing John Deere
ribbons in her hair. It’s also the home of 6-0 senior
middle blocker Amber Smith – a hidden volleyball
gem who is making an immediate impact on the prep volleyball
scene despite limited exposure and little experience.
Out and about in her pick-up truck, country music blares
as Smith pulls up to practice with her Tidewater Juniors
17s team. A proven “natural,” Smith’s
teammates are glad to have her on their side. But it was
a particular phone call that Smith received a few years
back, a twist-of-fate perhaps, that’s the reason
Smith is on the court at all.
“I was actually cut my 7th grade year,” the
self-proclaimed country girl said. “I wasn’t
interested in trying out again so I chose not to when
I was in the 8th grade.” But a phone call from a
volleyball coach at Portsmouth Christian Academy, where
Smith attends, changed her life for the better and reintroduced
her to the game of volleyball.
“Coach called and asked if I was trying out,”
she said. “I told her I didn’t have a ride
or a way to get there, and she offered to pick me up.
So, I agreed to go.” And now, in her senior year,
teammates and fans in this community are glad Smith answered
the phone and glad she agreed to be picked up for tryouts.
Raw with talent and armed with a huge desire to win,
Smith is years behind when compared to other peers her
age. Club volleyball players her age from Texas or California,
for example, have been playing since they could walk.
But on the court, comparisons become irrelevant as Smith
holds her own day in and day out. “Amber is a great
athlete who came out of nowhere,” club coach Drew
Williams said. “She virtually has no volleyball
knowledge and no volleyball training, yet she’s
out there, competing at a high level.”
Making her debut just three short years ago, Smith only
knew small Virginia private high school ball. She was
fortunate to have attended two team camps and is blessed
with the athleticism that showed she is destined for greatness.
Yet she refused to let inexperience be a factor, earning
2006 and 2007 All Metro Conference awards and a Co-MVP
honor. Now, Smith is becoming accustomed to the life of
a club volleyball player. “It’s a lot different
than high school. I’m still trying to get used to
all of the different types of sets. I’ve never run
a quick set or a slide; we just threw it up there.”
Now it seems as though Smith plays with ice water running
through her veins. “She doesn’t get nervous.
She’ll shrug her shoulders and smile. I’m
not sure she even knows when she should be rattled. She
just shows total confidence,” Williams said. “She
has this ability to just go out there and play. She doesn’t
know to get nervous.”

Smith's head flies back on this block, but she's waaay
overt the net
Yet, with all this newfound volleyball attention, Smith
remains humble and true to herself. This small town girl
will always remember where she came from and always keep
her dreams in sight. “Her first plane ride was a
recent volleyball tournament to Dayton,” Williams
said. “She’s just a great kid – always
wants to cheer her teammates on. I’ve never seen
her have a bad day. She deals with things and always keeps
a smile on her face. She just likes to win and doesn’t
want to accept not being good enough.” As for now,
Smith is looking to continue to improve and will rely
heavily on the coaching of Williams to improve her skills
and sharpen her fundamentals. “Coach Williams is
a good coach,” Smith says. “He laughs at me.
Sometimes he forgets that I have no idea what he’s
talking about. He’ll use words or terms and I’ll
be like ‘What’?”
There appears to be no limit to what this girl can achieve
and, possessing a cannon for a right arm, this isn’t
the last time we’ll hear from this small-town girl
with a volleyball talent too good to go unnoticed.
